According to a recently released study from Nielsen, the average U.S. Internet user spends more time on Facebook than on Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Microsoft, Wikipedia and Amazon combined. The survey shows that an average U.S. Internet user now spends more than seven hours on Facebook each month, up more than 50 percent from four hours and 39 minutes per month in June 2009. This amounts to more than 14 minutes per day. If you haven’t put social media into your marketing mix, now is definitely the time.
Here are some tips to get you started:
- Engage your audience: Users have enough marketing message directed at them each day. Rather than talking at your fans, talk with them. Engage them. Ask them questions. For example, “What would you like <YOUR BUSINESS NAME> to do for you?” This can be one of the least expensive and best forms of market research.
- Drive traffic to your Web site: Use your informational Facebook posts to compel fans to visit your Web site for more information.
- Actively recruit fans: Be sure to put a ‘Become a Fan’ Facebook button on your Web site.
Of course, this is just a beginning. Once you start engaging with your clients and fans using social media, you undoubtedly will find even more ways of positively interacting.
